The Sacro Monte of Varese is a devotional complex consisting of 14 Chapels, the Sanctuary and the Crypt, built on Mount Velate between 1604 and 1698 as a work of popular evangelization aimed at celebrating the dogmas of the Catholic church against the spread of the Protestant Reformation .

The itinerary consists of a sacred road about 2 km long with 14 chapels that tell the mysteries of the Rosary.

You reach the first access arch to the avenue of the chapels through the driveway (via Conventino) which – as an alternative to the sacred road that can only be traveled on foot – leads to the top of the mountain.

Next to the first chapel of the Sacro Monte of Varese is the Monsignor “Macchi” exhibition center, a place of welcome for visitors and pilgrims.

At the end of the 2 km uphill path, with cobbled bottom, you enter the small village of Santa Maria del Monte where the visitor can walk the ancient covered streets and visit the Baroffio museum and Casa Museo Pogliaghi, up to the Sanctuary and the Monastery of the Romite Ambrosiane.

For those who reach the summit of the mountain by car or bus (parking in Piazzale Pogliaghi), take the short “Via del Ceppo” that leads to the elevators that make it possible to bridge the difference up to the small square Paolo VI, which leads to the Sanctuary.

The climb through the funicular of the Sacro Monte di Varese, built in 1909 and restored a few years ago, is also impressive.

On days Saturday and Sunday the bus line C leads to the valley station of the funicular, from which in a few minutes you go up to the mountain station.
